Agartala: The recent murder of Durga Prasanna Deb, secretary of the Bharat Ratna Sangha club and a prominent social activist, has sent shockwaves across Tripura. The incident, which occurred on May 1, has exposed the underlying power struggles among influential groups vying for Central Public Works Department (CPWD) contracts.
This tragic event has evoked memories of past law and order crises in Tripura and Agartala, leaving local residents apprehensive about potential escalation of violence.
In response to the simmering tension, the forum of community clubs issued a fervent plea on Monday to halt the “ugly power struggle” that has led to bloodshed. Members of the club forum emphasized that such violence is intolerable in a civilized society and called for collective action to end the cycle of conflict.
Sebak Bhattacharjee, an office bearer of the Agartala Club Forum, condemned the violence and underscored the Bharat Ratna Sangha Club’s significant contributions to the community. He urged locals to reject illegal activities and expressed confidence in the police department’s efforts.
Meanwhile, Tripura Police have already arrested three individuals, including former Club Secretary Pradyot Dhar Chowdhary, Susmita Sarkar, and Bir Chakra Ghosh. Ghosh was apprehended in Kolkata’s Mukundapur area. Additionally, the police are interrogating three more suspects and have issued warnings to individuals reportedly on the assailants’ radar.
