'Mahajan', not 'Maharaj': Tripura Cong MLA taunts Pradyot
Congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman

Guwahati: Tripura Pradesh Congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman on Wednesday called royal scion Pradyot Kishore Debbarman a “Mahajan”. According to Barman, the best reference that suited the Tipra Motha Founder is ‘Mahajan’ not ‘Maharaj’.

Justifying his sweeping remarks against the supremo of the state’s second biggest political party in Tripura in terms of strength in the assembly, Barman said, “In the villages, the owners of big shops are called Mahajan. He has completely sold out the Tiprasa people. Everybody is aware of the understanding that helped him manage a ticket for his sister from the East Tripura parliamentary constituency. This is an open secret now.”

Barman made the statement as he interacted with reporters during a meeting of the INIDA bloc members at Agartala Press Club. Representatives of all the eight parties that are constituents of the INDIA bloc combination in Tripura attended the meeting including Leader of the Opposition and CPIM state secretary Jitendra Choudhury.

Hitting out at Debbarman, the Leader of the Opposition claimed that he did not only dilute the interests of the tribal people but also sold the symbol of the pineapple. Debbarman’s sister is contesting the elections on a BJP ticket.

When asked about the TMP supremo’s claims that because of him Jitendra Choudhury managed to secure his victory with a wafer-thin margin from the Sabroom assembly constituency, Choudhury retorted that his statement made it crystal clear that he was instrumental in bringing BJP back to power.

“We have been saying since the very beginning that he is the man who brought the BJP back to power. Finally, he validated our allegations. He fielded candidates in 22 unreserved seats which became the reason for BJP’s victory because of a split in the opposition’s vote share,” he added.
