Bodies of fishermen being recovered from Dumboor reservoir.

Agartala: More than 200 houses were severely damaged as heavy thunderstorms accompanied by gusty wind lashed different parts of Tripura.

According to a report prepared by Disathe ster Management Authority, a total of 23 houses were reduced to rubble while 215 dwellings suffered severe destruction. The number of houses that were party damaged stands at 4,345, the report stated.

Speaking on the issue, an official with the State Disaster Management Programme said, “Most of the affected families have been paid instant cash assistance from the state disaster management funds. As of 4 PM, March 24, Rs 1.10 Lakh was paid to the affected families. Further compensation will be paid based on the assessment being carried out by the revenue department.”

The highest volume of destruction was reported from Sonamura, Bishalgarh, and Teliamura. Apart from that, electricity poles were also uprooted in different parts of the state leaving many areas under darkness. Restoration works of power supply have been taken up promptly but rain interruptions caused the delay in the work, officials have said.

Meanwhile, four fishermen lost their lives in the Ganda Twisa subdivision under the Dhalai district of Tripura. All four fishermen got trapped in the cage culture nets installed in the Dumboor reservoir as they entered into the temporary huts built on the water body to escape the heavy storms.

Meanwhile, SDRF and fire brigade troopers already retrieved the mortal remains of three of the four fishermen who went missing on Saturday night.

The deceased persons are identified as Haridas Das, Jatish Mallik, and Pradip Das. All of them are residents of Das Para Ganda Twisa. Expert divers from NDRF now swung into action in the state’s biggest water body to trace the last missing person.
