Agartala: A minor girl was raped by her neighbour on Monday night in the Bagbasa area under North Tripura district. The accused identified as Tatan Bagati (27) has absconded the area as soon as a police complaint was lodged.

According to police sources, late on Monday night, the accused person was bringing back the minor girl to her home from a friend’s house located within walking distance. On reaching home, the victim informed her mother that taking advantage of her loneliness, the accused forced him on her.

While speaking to media persons, the mother of the victim said, “My daughter used to consider the accused as an elder brother. Both of them went to their friend’s house to attend a religious function organized to mark the entry to the newly constructed house. He gave slip to the eyes of others and took my daughter to the jungle and raped her.”

According to parents, they could come to know about the incident when she returned home.

Speaking on the issue, superintendent of police North Tripura district Bhanupada Chakraborty said, “This is an unfortunate incident. Offenders of such heinous crimes must not go scot-free. Women police station Dharmanagar has registered the case under IPC section 376 (AB), 325, and section 6 of the POCSO Act and started an inquiry. Raids are being conducted in the possible hideouts of the accused person.”

Meanwhile, in a separate incident, a 21-year-old housewife succumbed to death due to burn injuries that she suffered a few days back.

The deceased Shipra Sarkar was reportedly cooking a sweet dish for her daughter on the occasion of her toddler’s rice ceremony.

“Failed to produce enough heat in the oven, she poured Kerosene in the furnace leading to a massive fire that caught her Saree. She was immediately rushed to the GBP hospital but her life couldn’t be saved,” the husband of the deceased person has said.
