Agartala: Mayor of Agartala City Corporation, the largest civic body in Tripura, unveiled a deficit budget worth Rs 417.97 crore for the fiscal year 2024-2025. Despite proposing no new taxes, the budget represents a 5 percent increase compared to the previous year.
Mayor Dipak Majumder, addressing reporters, stated, “We haven’t proposed new taxes in the budget as we have scopes to improve our revenue collection if all citizens pay their taxes promptly. Approximately 50 percent of residents in the city corporation areas are not fulfilling their tax obligations. Similarly, only 50 percent of the population contributes to solid garbage collection. Despite cooperation from half the populace, expectations for 100 percent service persist, and we are committed to providing efficient services.”
Majumder outlined new initiatives undertaken by the Agartala Municipal Corporation, stating, “We have launched a series of plans to address drinking water issues in select areas of the city. Three new pumps will be installed in low-lying areas to mitigate waterlogging during the rainy season. Additionally, new fogging machines will be procured to combat mosquito infestation.”
Detailing the budget proposals, Majumder explained, “This year, we face a deficit of Rs 76 lakh 75 thousand, which could be easily offset if all taxpayers fulfill their obligations. Last year, we passed a budget of Rs 397 crore and managed to cover a deficit of Rs 50 lakh through our earnings. We are prioritizing trade licenses and GIS-based property taxation for revenue generation, instead of imposing direct taxes on residents.”
He also disclosed that funds have been allocated for the renovation and redevelopment of the city’s infrastructure, aiming to enhance civic amenities for residents.
