Agartala: A group of people brutally thrashed a transgender person identified as Mahi Das (26) at Kamalpur under the Dhalai district of Tripura.

In this connection, FIR was lodged against the assailants, OC Kamalpur Police Station Binay Laskar told EastMojo. “We have registered an FIR, and as per the charges framed against them, follow-up action will be taken in due course,” he said.

Sources said Das, along with two other members of her community, went to the house of one Jitendra Namasudra on Wednesday. They reportedly went there to collect a donation from the family, a source of their livelihood.

On auspicious occasions, donations to transgender individuals are considered a good omen. However, the family refused to pay the amount demanded by Das, which triggered a heated exchange of words.

At one point, some people gathered at the wedding lost their cool and inflicted severe injuries on her. Das received three stitches on her forehead at Bilam Sinha Memorial College.

“We received a call from the Kalachari area. When we reached there, we saw that a transgender person called Mahi Das was severely injured. We shifted her to Bimal Sinha Memorial Hospital here for treatment,” said an on-duty police officer. Das was discharged from the hospital after treatment.
