Google's Gemini AI gets memory feature for future conversations

Google is reportedly gearing up to unveil a new feature for its AI chatbot Gemini, dubbed “Memory,” which could revolutionize user interactions by enabling the bot to retain specific details from past conversations. This move echoes a similar feature introduced by OpenAI for its ChatGPT app earlier this year.

According to insider information shared by tipster Dylan Roussel on X (formerly Twitter), Google may officially announce the Memory feature in the coming days, possibly coinciding with the Google I/O event scheduled for Tuesday. Roussel also provided a sneak peek at the feature through a screenshot of the app, showcasing an introductory slide outlining its functionality.

Speculations about Google integrating long-term contextual memory into Gemini first surfaced last year, following reports from 9to5Google. This latest development suggests that Memory could be among several new AI features set to enhance Gemini’s capabilities in the near future.

Based on the revealed screenshot, users will have the ability to instruct Gemini to remember various personal details such as their residential, occupational, and educational statuses, as well as any allergies they may have. Subsequently, in subsequent interactions, the chatbot will leverage this stored information to tailor responses accordingly. For example, if a user with a peanut allergy seeks advice on sandwich recipes, Gemini will refrain from suggesting any recipes containing peanuts, thus alleviating the need for repetitive reminders.

The description of the feature in the screenshot indicates that Gemini will facilitate a seamless user experience by recalling previously shared information, thereby eliminating the need for users to repeat themselves. Additionally, it suggests that users will have the option to manage their stored memories or deactivate the feature altogether.

However, crucial details such as the platforms where this feature will be available, its exclusivity to the app, the ability to delete stored memories, and the privacy implications remain uncertain at this juncture.
