Microsoft is purportedly in the works to introduce its most extensive in-house artificial intelligence (AI) model yet, dubbed MAI-1. Headed by Mustafa Suleyman, former CEO of Inflection AI and co-founder of Google DeepMind, Microsoft’s AI division is spearheading the development of this groundbreaking model. Recent reports indicate that MAI-1 is in advanced stages of development and may soon be unveiled.
The forthcoming MAI-1 AI model, as per sources within Microsoft, boasts a staggering 500 billion parameters, making it the largest Language Learning Model (LLM) crafted by the tech titan. For perspective, Microsoft’s previous small language model (SLM), Phi-3-mini, housed 3.8 billion parameters, while GPT-4 reached one trillion parameters. The augmentation in parameter count enriches the model’s knowledge base and enhances its contextual understanding, potentially bolstering its efficacy as a chatbot.
Despite its considerable progress, MAI-1’s exact application remains undetermined, contingent upon its final capabilities. However, speculations abound that Microsoft might offer a sneak peek of the AI model at its annual developer-centric event, Microsoft Build, scheduled to commence on May 21.

Interestingly, Microsoft purportedly opted to develop MAI-1 in-house, eschewing acquisition from Inflection AI. Nonetheless, it’s speculated that data from the startup might have facilitated the training of this colossal model. Whether MAI-1 will follow in the footsteps of its predecessor Phi-3-mini and be open-sourced or necessitate a subscription fee for access remains uncertain. The tech behemoth could also integrate it into its own suite of AI products. Clarity on these matters is anticipated during the forthcoming Build event.
In a separate development, OpenAI is reportedly on the cusp of launching its ChatGPT-powered search engine. Domain registration and SSL certificate acquisition signify significant progress towards this milestone, fueling speculation of an imminent May 9 launch.
