Nayan Jyoti, a skilled artisan from Assam, has been weaving beautiful fabrics using traditional techniques for the past 7-8 years under the banner of Impulse Social Enterprises. She learned her craft from her mother, Rekha Doley, who served as a significant inspiration in her life. Nayan balances her personal responsibilities with her passion for weaving, dedicating two to three hours each day to her work, whenever she finds the time. Her dedication to preserving Assam’s cultural heritage through her craft is evident in the stunning textiles she creates.
Despite her talent, Nayan has yet to monetise her work fully. She uses social media platforms such as Facebook and Instagram to promote her designs but has not started selling her products online. However, she hopes to take this next step soon and grow her business further.
The COVID-19 pandemic brought numerous challenges for Nayan and her family, who were confined to their home and faced severe financial difficulties. Impulse Social Enterprises provided much-needed relief to her family and other villagers during this difficult time. Nayan, in turn, assisted in distributing relief to elderly people and fellow artisans in her community.
As a participant in Meta’s Business Coach programme, Nayan has gained valuable insights into how to showcase her products on social media. She is optimistic that these skills will help her start selling her weavings online soon, bringing her craft to a wider audience and helping her grow her business.
Impulse Empower, an initiative by Impulse Social Enterprises, continues to document the stories of entrepreneurs like Nayan Jyoti, highlighting how their efforts are contributing to the local economy and creating jobs. With the support of Meta and the Impulse NGO Network, these entrepreneurs are developing resilient markets and reducing the risks of unsafe migration and exploitation in Northeast India and North Bengal.
