Manchester United defender Matthijs de Ligt celebrated his first Manchester derby win with a heartfelt message to the fans on Sunday, following the team’s come-from-behind 2-1 victory against Manchester City at the Etihad. The Dutchman, who joined United from Bayern Munich in the summer, started the match alongside Harry Maguire and Lisandro Martinez, forming a solid defensive unit that impressed throughout the game.
Despite conceding an early goal to Josko Gvardiol, United rallied in the second half. Bruno Fernandes converted a penalty in the 88th minute, and Amad Diallo scored the winner just two minutes later, securing a vital three points for the Red Devils.
De Ligt took to Instagram after the match, posting: “First Manchester derby, first win. This one’s for the fans!” His message received a quick response from United captain Bruno Fernandes, who left three flexed bicep emojis in the comments.
This win was particularly crucial for United, who had previously suffered consecutive Premier League defeats to Arsenal and Nottingham Forest. Speaking after the match, United manager Ruben Amorim praised his players’ focus and determination. Manchester United’s official website quotes the players as saying they believed in today’s chances and focused on strategy. “But we have to give all the credit to the players. They changed everything today and this win is just from the players.” Amorim also highlighted the importance of team unity, stating, “This is a team sport and, if you believe, work hard and sacrifice for each other, you can achieve things.”
The victory sees United climb to 13th place in the Premier League, six points adrift of the top four.
