Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has committed his future to the club by signing a new long-term contract, as announced by the Premier League contenders on Thursday. The 42-year-old Spaniard, who reportedly agreed to a three-year deal, has been credited with re-establishing the Gunners as a leading force in both English and European football. Since taking the helm in late 2019, Arteta has played a pivotal role in Arsenal’s resurgence and expressed his pride in continuing his journey at the Emirates Stadium.
“I feel extremely proud and lucky to work every day with great people and to share the ambition we have here at Arsenal,” Arteta said in a statement following the announcement. “I feel inspired, challenged, and supported, and I want to do even more than what we’ve achieved together so far.”
Arteta’s new deal was met with enthusiasm by Arsenal’s co-chairman, Josh Kroenke, who praised the manager’s passion and relentless pursuit of excellence. “Mikel is a dynamic manager who understands Arsenal’s values deeply. Arteta succeeded Unai Emery in December 2019, having previously served as an assistant coach to Pep Guardiola at Manchester City. In his first season as Arsenal manager, he secured the FA Cup, his first major silverware as a coach. Under his leadership, Arsenal have consistently competed at the top of the Premier League, finishing as runners-up to City in the past two seasons, narrowly missing out on the title last season on the final day.
Arsenal are currently fourth in the Premier League table, having secured two wins and a draw in their opening games. They are preparing for a highly anticipated north London derby against Tottenham on Sunday, and will soon embark on their Champions League campaign against Atalanta next week.
In a press conference last month, Arteta remained calm when asked about his contract status, stating that his focus had been on the summer transfer window. He emphasised his happiness at the club, saying, “I don’t think anybody needs to panic. I’m in the place I want to be and I’m really happy here. I hope the club feels the same.”
Arsenal made several notable signings during the summer transfer window, including Raheem Sterling, Mikel Merino, and Riccardo Calafiori. However, questions remain over whether the club has strengthened sufficiently to challenge champions Manchester City, particularly after their failure to secure a striker to complement Germany forward Kai Havertz.

Arteta, a former Arsenal captain who made 150 appearances for the club during his playing career, has been linked to managerial roles at Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona in recent months. However, his new contract at Arsenal solidifies his commitment to the club as they continue their pursuit of domestic and European success.
