Intelsat 33e shatters in orbit, space agencies on alert for growing debris

The communications satellite Intelsat 33e, built by Boeing, unexpectedly broke apart in orbit over the weekend, creating at least 20 pieces of space debris. The satellite, which had provided broadband services across Europe, Africa, and Asia, was operating from a geostationary orbit above the Indian Ocean before ceasing to function on 19 October 2024. On 21 October, Intelsat, the satellite’s operator, confirmed the total loss of the satellite, though the cause of the disintegration remains unknown.

The U.S. Space Force verified that the Intelsat 33e satellite had fragmented into at least 20 pieces, though the debris poses no immediate danger. Representatives from Intelsat stated they are working closely with Boeing and relevant government agencies to investigate the incident. A Failure Review Board has been formed to conduct a comprehensive analysis and uncover the cause of the breakdown.

Launched in 2016, Intelsat 33e was part of Boeing’s EpicNG platform, developed as a next-generation satellite to enhance global communication capabilities. However, this is not the first issue with the platform. Intelsat 29e, another satellite in the same series, suffered a malfunction due to a potential micrometeoroid strike or solar storm. These incidents have cut short the expected 15-year lifespan of these satellites, raising questions about the long-term reliability of the EpicNG platform.

The disintegration of Intelsat 33e adds to the growing issue of space debris. Space agencies are currently tracking over 30,000 pieces of large debris in Earth’s orbit, but countless smaller fragments remain unmonitored. Various solutions have been proposed to address this escalating problem, including the use of nets, claw-equipped robots, and tethers to remove debris from orbit. With incidents like this on the rise, finding effective methods to manage space junk has become more urgent than ever.
