Gangtok: The controversy surrounding the demolition of a temporary shop structure near the New STNM Hospital at Sochakgang has intensified after a counter FIR was lodged against Upper Burtuk MLA Kala Rai, accusing her of forcibly demolishing the structure despite the absence of a final eviction order.
According to sources, the FIR was registered following a court direction in connection with a complaint filed by Sonam Pintso Bhutia of Ranka.
The complainant alleged that he had been operating the temporary shed adjacent to his shop for nearly 15 years under a valid trade licence issued in his wife’s name. However, on April 8, the structure was allegedly demolished by Kala Rai along with supporters and labourers, even as an encroachment-related matter remained unresolved.
The FIR further alleges that the MLA and others forcibly entered the premises, used abusive and intimidating language, and destroyed the structure along with materials stored inside, allegedly causing significant financial losses to the shop owner.
The complaint also stated that the entire incident was captured on CCTV cameras installed in the hospital area.
The case has been registered under various sections of the BNS. Police confirmed that an investigation is currently underway.
The development has added a fresh political dimension to the already contentious licensing and encroachment dispute, triggering debate over alleged misuse of authority and adherence to due legal process.
