Gangtok: In a swift response to heavy snowfall in the high-altitude areas of East Sikkim, troops of the Indian Army launched a rescue operation under #OpHimrahat on February 22, successfully evacuating stranded locals and tourists facing extreme weather conditions.
Sudden and intense snowfall, accompanied by sub-zero temperatures, brought traffic to a halt along vulnerable stretches of road, leaving several tourist vehicles stranded and civilians exposed to harsh climatic conditions.
Acting promptly, Army personnel moved to the affected locations and initiated coordinated relief and rescue measures. A total of 46 tourists were safely rescued and shifted to the nearest Army camp, where they underwent medical examinations and were provided warm shelter, hot meals, heating arrangements, and essential relief supplies.
Medical teams on site ensured that all rescued individuals were stable and adequately cared for before further movement.
In addition to evacuating stranded tourists, the Army also facilitated the safe and orderly movement of more than 150 tourist vehicles to secure locations. The coordinated effort helped regulate traffic, prevent panic, and minimise the risk of further exposure in the high-altitude terrain.
