Gangtok: A urologist from Sikkim, who had collapsed while attending an international urology conference in Indore, passed away in the early hours of Wednesday, hospital sources confirmed.

Dr Tshering (Doma) Bhutia had collapsed on Saturday afternoon while delivering a presentation during a technical session at the Urological Society of India Conference (USICON-2026), being held in Indore.

Doctors and delegates present at the venue immediately rushed to her aid and administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). She was initially taken to Life Care Hospital and later referred to Apollo Hospital for advanced treatment.

Medical investigations revealed that Dr Bhutia was suffering from a pre-existing brain aneurysm. Medical experts explained that a brain aneurysm is a weak or thin spot in a blood vessel of the brain that balloons out and fills with blood. In her case, the aneurysm ruptured suddenly, leading to severe internal bleeding or haemorrhage. The rupture caused her to lose consciousness immediately and left her in a critical condition.

Following the incident, Dr Bhutia was placed on ventilator support. As her condition remained critical, plans were made on Monday to airlift her to Medanta Hospital in Mumbai. However, her family later decided to shift her to Medanta Hospital in Indore. Despite continued medical intervention, she succumbed to her condition on Wednesday.

“Dr Bhutia succumbed to her medical condition on Wednesday. Her body is being sent to her hometown,” sources said.

Colleagues and members of the medical fraternity in Sikkim expressed deep shock and grief over her untimely demise. She was described as a dedicated and promising urologist with a bright future ahead.

Health Minister G.T. Dhungel said Dr Bhutia was a budding urologist and an active member of the medical community, adding that her death was a significant loss to the profession. He also condoled her death, terming it a great loss to the state of Sikkim.
