In a distressing incident, a white stray dog, estimated to be between three and four years old, was shot and killed by an unidentified individual on Kazi Road, Gangtok, on 19 July.
The shocking event came to light when a local resident informed a member of People For Animals (PFA) Sikkim, an NGO chaired by Maneka Gandhi. Despite efforts to gather information, residents and locals were unwilling to discuss the matter.
Information shared within the PFA group chat revealed that the dog had been buried nearby. While the initial cause of death was uncertain, an anonymous source later disclosed that the dog had been shot, though no individual was named. To confirm the cause of death, a case was registered at Sadar Thana, and the dog’s body was exhumed and sent to the polyclinic for examination and post-mortem. Medical evidence subsequently confirmed that the dog had been shot in the chest. The anonymous source also indicated that this was not the first instance of a stray dog being shot in the area.

Animal activist Sagar Singh brought the case to public attention through the media. Rebina Rai, a PFA member, registered the case on 19 July and, following the post-mortem, buried the dog’s body at her residence in Assam Lingzey. PFA members have strongly condemned the act and are collaborating with police and authorities to seek justice for the dog. Maneka Gandhi has been informed of the incident and is in direct contact with SP Gangtok, Tenzing Loden Lepcha, who has assured that a thorough investigation will be conducted to identify and prosecute the perpetrator.
