Gangtok: Indra Hang Subba, Sikkim’s lone Lok Sabha MP, has emphasised the need for the central government to alter its approach towards addressing issues in the Himalayan region.
He highlighted that these problems should not be measured with the same yardstick as those applied to the plains.
Subba held a meeting with GREF and BRO on Tuesday to tackle the pressing road connectivity challenges in Mangan District exacerbated by incessant rainfall triggering landslides and flash floods.
“If the weather becomes favourable, that road stretch will also be clear in 4-5 days. Yet somehow, one way traffic to Mangan has been cleared. However connectivity beyond Mangan (towards Chungthang) is still not clear, as there are major damages”, shared Subba.
Drawing attention to the deteriorating condition of NH 10, Subba recalled briefing Roads and Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari during his initial tenure about the erosion issues along the highway caused by dams on the Teesta river.
“Due to the existence of dams on Teesta river along the NH 10, there has been major erosion across NH 10 making it unstable. There has to be either an alternative (route) or protective work must begin. We have apprised and we are hopeful looks into the positive development of the NH 10. We will have to either strengthen or look for alternative”.

In his subsequent term, Subba intends to ensure prudent allocation and utilisation of funds earmarked for NH 10, and if necessary, will seek additional funding from the ministry.
Regarding the imperative for protective riverbank structures in Sikkim, Subba affirmed, “State government will work towards it, in tandem with the central government. There is a scientific study also being done on how restoration can be done permanently”.
