Gangtok: Following the swearing-in of the new government in Gangtok, several incidents of stone pelting were reported around the city.
The houses of former Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) legislators Mechung Bhutia and Norzang Lepcha were attacked in Burtuk. Additionally, the home of former Indian football captain Bhaichung Bhutia in Lumsey was targeted. Bhutia had recently lost to Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) candidate Rikshal Dorjee Bhutia in the Barfung constituency.
Independent MP candidate Nawin Kiran Pradhan’s home also faced similar attacks. CCTV footage has emerged showing men with scarves covering their faces pelting stones at these residences on Monday night.
The authorities are investigating the incidents, and security has been increased around the affected areas.
Sikkim Democratic Front party condemned the ‘vandalism and acts of violence’ on SDF leaders Udai Lama, Mechung Bhutia, Norzang Lepcha, Bhaichung Bhutia and Ashis Rai with stone pelting and vandalism.
They registered FIRs at the Sadar Police Station in Gangtok, informing “The persons were traveling in two SUVs during the night. Sikkim Police has promised to locate the culprits”.

The SDF Party condemned, “These acts of violence which unfortunately is not in alignment with the official statements of the SKM Party. This is not an auspicious start to the second innings of Golay as Chief Minister. He must protect the people of Sikkim from such acts, whatever the motivation”. Appealing to the authorities to take due cognizance and establish the rule of law.
Citing other incidents of vandalism in South Sikkim’s Poklok Kamrang and Namchi along with Soreng, stronghold of Chief Minister Prem Singh Golay, SDF submitted a list of the persons affected to IPS Special DGP Akshay Sachdeva.
