Gangtok: Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) party supremo Pawan Kumar Chamling has leveled serious allegations against Chief Minister Prem Singh Golay, accusing him of orchestrating the attack on former Sikkim Legislative Assembly speaker KN Rai on March 1.

Chamling’s accusations surfaced during the 32nd foundation day celebration of the SDF party in Legship, Gyalshing district on Monday.

Addressing the public, the Namchi Singhithang legislator asserted, “The attack on former speaker KN Rai was carried out on the direction of Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Golay, his political secretary Jacob Khaling and others in Sikkim Krantikari Morcha party. No one has the courage nor moral ethics to attack a former speaker, it was the top leaders of SKM who carried out the attack. If all the accused are not arrested by tomorrow (March 5), we will declare war (andolan) against SKM. I urge people to rise up from every village in protest against this political terrorism under SKM”.

Providing an update on the condition of his fellow party colleague, KN Rai, who has been rushed to New Delhi, Chamling revealed, “KN Rai is a senior citizen, he has been rushed to New Delhi as his injuries are too grievous needing facial reconstruction. He was beaten with rod, stones, he has a broken nose. This was all pre-planned, the attackers were waiting for him”.

Chamling highlighted what he termed as a ‘Manipur-like situation in Sikkim’, emphasising, “When we were in governance for 25 years, Sikkim was considered one of the most peaceful states. Now we are only second to Manipur in terms of violence. We SDF won’t let Sikkim become another Manipur. The biggest development in Sikkim is peace, something that even money cannot buy. For 25 years they got peace, now in its absence people feel what peace used to be like”.

Expressing concern over the escalating violence, Chamling sarcastically remarked, “The new normal in Sikkim is violence currently, someone getting beaten up, bodies being found, stone pelting being a regular phenomenon, this is the normal in Sikkim now. There is no police, there is no law and order”.

Labeling the SKM government as ‘Jungle Sarkar’ (Jungle Government), Chamling further criticised, “This is a Junglee Sarkar. Where people don’t feel safe or protected, not from the animals or dacoits but from the government itself. When Golay was in opposition, we never attacked him, we let him flourish as opposition. When in government now, even the basic FIR by opposition party is not registered. In Sikkim, now people have to fear the government itself”.

Chamling also made a slew of promises if elected to power in 2024 elections, claiming his party has now been cleansed of all corrupt politicians and opportunists who have now joined SKM party. He declined from being ‘attracted to be CM again’, asserting that his politics under SDF 2.0 to be to Save Sikkim.
