Kalimpong: An under-construction bridge in Tarkhola, connecting Tar Khola in Kalimpong District and Thalthale in Sikkim, collapsed today, according to local sources.
The bridge, being constructed by NHPC under Patel Construction Contractors, was intended to replace the old bridge damaged in the Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) on October 3, 2023.
Construction had been underway for the past two months with an expected completion within a week.

Shanti Rai, DC of the Teesta Rescue Centre, stated, “Despite the construction of strong pillars by workers, it appears that the entire bridge was washed away by the flood.”
She added, “Fortunately, there have been no casualties, but three workers sustained injuries in the incident and have been transferred to Kalimpong Hospital by volunteers from the Teesta Rescue Centre.”
