Guwahati: Deep in the forests of Arunachal Pradesh, a simple yellow pan trap revealed an extraordinary secret: a wasp species previously unknown to science. That chance encounter has now led to the first report of the wasp genus Heinrichiellus in the Oriental region, with scientists describing three new species from India and Thailand.
“During the Siang Expedition, funded by the National Geographic Society and Felis Creations, our team reached the remote village of Yingku in Arunachal Pradesh—one of India’s last frontiers of biodiversity. What awaited us there was beyond our imagination. Hidden among the forests and farmlands was a tiny creature that had never before been introduced to science,” said Dr. A.P. Ranjith (Kālinga Foundation, India & Chulalongkorn University, Thailand).
On the very first day of fieldwork, Ranjith and colleagues collected a male and female pair of the species, now formally named Heinrichiellus natgeo. “Today, we are proud to formally present Heinrichiellus natgeo, a newly discovered species of parasitoid wasp,” he said.
The name is a tribute to the National Geographic Society (NGS), whose long-standing support for exploration and conservation made the discovery possible. “The name NatGeo was chosen in honour of the National Geographic Society, whose legacy of exploration, conservation, and storytelling has inspired generations. Despite its small size, this wasp plays an outsized role in maintaining ecosystem balance as a natural enemy of certain pest species—quietly ensuring that nature’s checks and balances remain intact,” Dr. Ranjith explained.
Unlike more conspicuous insects, H. natgeo blends quietly into its surroundings. “With no bright colours or loud buzzing, it is instead a patient hunter, likely seeking out the eggs or larvae of its host species. Although we do not yet have detailed biological data, we anticipate that this species contributes significantly to regulating pest populations in forest ecosystems,” he added.
Adding to the intrigue, the discovery was made with a deceptively modest tool—a yellow pan trap. This simple method, which exploits parasitoid wasps’ attraction to the colour yellow, revealed what Ranjith called “a scientific treasure.”
Alongside H. natgeo, the research team also described Heinrichiellus vedani from Karnataka, India, named in honour of Kerala singer Vedan (Hirandas Murali), and Heinrichiellus brevispinus from Thailand, identified by its distinctive short spine-like projection.
“These discoveries are not just milestones for taxonomy—they are reminders of what is at stake in our rapidly changing world,” Ranjith noted. “In biodiversity hotspots, where species often vanish before they can be documented, every new find is both a celebration of nature’s resilience and an inspiration for the next generation of researchers.”
The study, published in the Journal of Hymenoptera Research, was led by Dr. Ranjith in collaboration with Dr. Gavin R. Broad (Natural History Museum, London), Dr. Bernardo F. Santos (Museum für Naturkunde, Berlin), and under the supervision of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Buntika A. Butcher (Chulalongkorn University, Thailand). Genetic analyses conducted by the team confirmed the genus’s placement in the Ichneumonini tribe, overturning earlier hypotheses and resolving a long-standing taxonomic puzzle.
With each new wasp species comes a larger truth: vast swathes of Asia’s insect diversity remain hidden. As the researchers emphasise, it will take both science and storytelling to ensure these wonders are not lost before they are known.
