With an already dragging economy at bay, plastic should be banned worldwide chase pavements towards crisis or it will help thrive is what we stand here today on World World Environment Day to find answers to.

No more plastic spoons, forks, plastic glasses, straws, earbuds with plastic stems or other items ubiquitous in our daily lives. But the dilemma is: should we or could we? Can plastic be banned worldwide even if we want to?  Single-use plastic could be banned but what about other types of plastics? Can every plastic be banned?

What about in different commodities where it is a necessity, and where it cannot be banned?

The applications of plastic are vast and integral to modern life, ranging from pen casings and medical equipment to various types of packaging, including food preservation and thermal insulation.

Plastics are essential in numerous sectors: from chip packets and shampoo bottles to the insulation of electrical wires, bicycle helmets, child safety seats, and automotive airbags. Even cell phones, which connect us globally, rely heavily on plastic components. However, the concept of a ban on plastics introduces significant complexities and contradictions.

Take, for instance, the prohibition of alcohol in certain regions; despite the legal restrictions, consumption persists. Similarly, while smoking is widely acknowledged as detrimental to health, a surprising 16.7% of doctors and 20.4% of nurses worldwide continue to smoke regularly. When discussing a global ban on plastics, it is crucial to consider these dichotomies.

The use of paper straws is often advocated as an environmentally friendly alternative to plastic straws. However, this effort is paradoxically undermined when the paper straw is packaged in a plastic wrapper.

This contradiction is reflective of a broader pattern in environmental initiatives, which can be illustrated through the lens of consumer behaviour and product lifecycle analysis. A pertinent example is the movement towards banning single-use plastic bags in favour of reusable bags. Intuitively, using canvas bags made from natural cotton seems to be the more sustainable choice compared to their synthetic plastic counterparts.

However, a comprehensive study conducted by the Danish government reveals a counterintuitive reality. The research highlights that the production of reusable cotton bags consumes significantly more environmental resources than that of standard plastic carrier bags. Consequently, the carbon emissions associated with cotton bag production are higher. To offset this environmental impact, an organic cotton bag must be used at least 149 times.

Similarly, the production of paper bags, while eliminating plastic, brings its own set of environmental issues, such as deforestation and water pollution. To match the environmental footprint of a single plastic bag, a paper bag would need to be reused 43 times—a scenario that is rarely feasible in practical terms. In the context of India, the challenges associated with the ban on single-use plastics are multifaceted.

According to the All India Plastic Manufacturers Association, approximately 88,000 units are involved in the production of single-use plastics, employing nearly one million people. The transition to alternative materials is hampered by the lack of affordable substitutes to meet the demand for banned plastic products. Additionally, India faces significant issues with plastic waste management.

The absence of an organized system results in widespread littering, with plastics polluting rivers, oceans, and landfills, thereby posing a serious threat to wildlife.

India produces approximately 3.4 million tonnes of plastic waste annually, yet only 30% of this is recycled. The blanket prohibition of all plastic packaging, without identifying viable alternative materials, can result in unintended adverse effects.

Presently, the core issue lies in plastic waste ending up as litter in our oceans, causing environmental damage, or in landfills where its potential value is wasted. To mitigate this, it is imperative to adopt the principles of reducing, reusing, and recycling plastics. For instance, shrink-wrapping a cucumber extends its shelf life by an impressive 15 days—a significant factor considering that, if food waste were a country, it would rank as the third-largest carbon emitter globally.

Instead of making categorical assertions such as advocating for a worldwide plastic ban, the emphasis should be on the “3Rs”: Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle. This approach does not call for an outright ban but focuses on minimizing usage, promoting reuse, and enhancing recycling efforts.

Danish supermarkets exemplify this by offering multi-use grocery bags made from various materials, including plastic, paper, and cotton. These bags are designed for repeated use, requiring multiple uses to offset the environmental impacts associated with their production.

To enact substantial change, transitioning to a circular economy, where products are continuously repurposed rather than discarded, is essential. Hence, the focus should shift from banning plastics to managing them responsibly on a global scale.

The movement gained further momentum when Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in a speech from the Red Fort, urged the people of India to “free the country from single-use plastics.” However, the exact amount of plastic used during such celebrations remains unclear.

Canada’s recent announcement underscores that plastic bans alone are insufficient to address the broader environmental challenges posed by plastic waste. Plastics are cost-effective and versatile, providing solutions to numerous problems and playing a crucial role in various sectors, from food preservation to healthcare.

To effect meaningful change, it is essential to transition to a circular economy where products are designed to be reused, recycled, or repurposed, thus preventing them from becoming waste. The Ellen MacArthur Foundation’s New Plastics Economy initiative, a prominent UK charity, advocates for this transition. The initiative outlines a strategic approach to achieve this goal, emphasizing the following principles:

  • Eliminate all problematic and unnecessary plastic items.
  • Innovate to ensure that the plastics we require are designed to be reusable, recyclable, or compostable.
  • Circulate all plastic items within the economy to keep them out of the environment, thereby maintaining their value.

The question is not whether banning plastic guarantees its non-use since such a guarantee is unattainable but rather how to manage plastic sustainably. To truly tackle these challenges, we must embrace a holistic approach that harmonizes environmental benefits with socio-economic realities and resource availability, rather than merely drafting theoretical solutions. Imagine crafting a symphony where each instrument represents a facet of sustainability—every note and rest thoughtfully composed to create a balanced and beautiful piece.

It’s not enough to simply write the music; we must play it, live it, and ensure that every stakeholder is in tune with this complex, yet vital, orchestration. Only then can we transform our ambitions from mere ink on a page into a resonant, sustainable future.
