Guwahati: The nation mourns the loss of former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, who passed away on Thursday. A distinguished Indian politician, economist, academician, and bureaucrat, Dr. Singh served as India’s Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014. His passing marks the end of an era in Indian politics and has drawn heartfelt condolences and tributes from across the country, including the Chief Ministers of the eight northeastern states, who shared their admiration and memories of the iconic leader.
Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma expressed his grief on Twitter, recalling Dr. Singh’s legacy as a remarkable economist and scholar. Sangma stated, “I recall his remarkable legacy as a distinguished economist, erudite scholar, and a leader who rose from humble beginnings. India will always cherish, remember, and take inspiration from his contributions. May his soul rest in eternal peace.”
Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh paid tribute, describing Dr. Singh as a visionary leader whose dedication to the nation left an indelible mark. He shared, “My heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones in this time of grief. May his soul rest in eternal peace.”
Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma also expressed his sorrow, stating, “His unparalleled contributions to India’s growth and governance will always be remembered. Heartfelt condolences to his family. May his soul rest in peace.”
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma shared a deeply personal connection, as Dr. Singh represented Assam in the Rajya Sabha for 28 years. Sarma highlighted Dr. Singh’s humility, intellect, and pivotal role in economic reforms, saying, “I have had the privilege of knowing Dr Manmohan Singh ji since 1991, when he was first elected to the Rajya Sabha from Assam- a state he represented for 28 years. Dr Sahab embodied humility and never surrendered to the trappings of power. In all my interactions with him, his simplicity and decency combined with his intellectual prowess always stood out. During his tenure as Prime Minister, I have had the opportunity to interact with him on several occasions regarding issues pertaining to Assam, and he always gave us a patient hearing and displayed a strong conviction towards social issues.Coming from humble origins in a post partition India, he served the nation in several distinguished positions. A generation of Indians will always remember his pivotal role in ushering a free market economy and ending decades of regressive socialist policies.” Sarma also announced a seven-day state mourning in Assam, during which the national flag will fly at half-mast, and all official entertainment programs will be canceled.
Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio described Dr. Singh as a “humble visionary” who shaped India’s economic growth. “His calm leadership, wisdom, and humility will always be remembered,” Rio shared.
Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang-Golay, in a Facebook post, lauded Dr. Singh’s contributions to economic reforms and public service, calling them unparalleled. He extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family.
Tripura Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha took to Twitter, expressing his sadness and admiration for Dr. Singh’s role in nation-building and shaping India’s economic landscape. “May the departed soul find eternal peace! Om Shanti,” he wrote.
Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu also paid homage, acknowledging Dr. Singh’s foundational contributions to India’s economic reforms as Finance Minister in the 1990s. “Dr. Singh’s passing marks the end of an era in Indian politics. May the departed soul rest in eternal peace. Om Shanti,” Khandu tweeted.
