Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with IRCON International Limited to oversee the maintenance of electrification infrastructure, including Overhead Equipment (OHE) and Power Supply Installations (PSI). This initiative marks the first collaboration of its kind within Indian Railways, aiming to address the growing demands of electrification maintenance in the Lumding and Tinsukia divisions.
The MoU was formalised by NFR General Manager Chetan Kumar Shrivastava and IRCON Chief Managing Director H.M. Gupta during a ceremony held on 26 December 2024.
The rapid progress of electrification in the Lumding and Tinsukia divisions has necessitated a focus on efficient maintenance. While most sections are already electrified, the remaining 425 route kilometres (RKM) are expected to be operational by June 2025. As electric traction is directly tied to train operations, maintaining the infrastructure requires skilled personnel and reliable systems.
To address these requirements, NFR has engaged IRCON, which has a long-standing reputation for managing complex infrastructure projects in challenging terrains both in India and abroad since its inception in 1976.
Under this two-year agreement, IRCON will be responsible for scheduled maintenance and attending to breakdowns in the electrified sections of Lumding and Tinsukia. This partnership is seen as a step towards establishing a systematic approach to electrification maintenance, ensuring uninterrupted train operations.

The collaboration with IRCON is also expected to facilitate knowledge exchange, enabling NFR to adopt the latest technologies and practices in the management of electrification infrastructure. The MoU aims to enhance operational efficiency and contribute to the overall reliability of railway services in the region.
NFR’s electrification efforts are advancing at a significant pace, with substantial sections already completed. The partnership with IRCON is intended to support these developments by ensuring that the growing maintenance needs are met without compromising service quality.
