Ukhrul: At least two local residents of Sharkaphung village under Kamjong district reportedly sustained bullet injuries during an unprovoked firing by alleged Kuki armed militants on Tuesday morning.
According to sources, the two individuals, identified as Ringyui Ramror, 30, and Raichan Lungleng, 25, sustained injuries to their legs and feet during the gun attack, which allegedly originated from the neighbouring Kuki village of Shangkai, located about 2 km away. Sources added that a long-range sniper is suspected to have fired the bullets.
Due to continued firing from the other side, the evacuation process of the two injured civilians for urgent medical treatment has been severely hampered, the sources added.
These two villages are situated near the Litan area, where clashes between the Tangkhul Naga and Kuki communities erupted, resulting in an arson attack on February 8. Due to sporadic firing incidents, the area remains tense to this day.
Meanwhile, the Central Working Committee of the Tangkhul Naga Foothills’ Organisation (TNFO) expressed grave concern over the ongoing acts of violence perpetrated by Kuki militants operating under the Suspension of Operation (SoO) agreement and has demanded immediate state intervention.
According to TNFO, since last night, Kuki militants have reportedly been firing sophisticated weapons from three locations—one along the Chassad–Kamjong axis and two other positions at Shangkai and Mangkot Chepu.
Disturbingly, these actions are said to have taken place in the presence of Central Forces. The indiscriminate firing has specifically targeted the Tangkhul Naga villages of Kamjong, Sharkaphung and Thoyee.
As a result of this unprovoked aggression, two innocent civilians—Ringyui Ramror (about 30 years old) and Raichan Lungleng (about 25 years old), both from Sharkaphung Tangkhul Village—have sustained injuries to their legs and feet.
Such acts are highly condemnable and pose a serious threat to peace, stability and communal harmony in the region.
Continued provocation by armed militants, particularly in the presence of Central Forces, raises grave concerns regarding the effectiveness and role of the security mechanisms in place. This situation also raises questions about the accountability of those responsible for maintaining law and order.
TNFO stated that on February 21, 2026, it had submitted a formal request to the Chief Minister, urging the upgradation of Litan Police Station to the level of Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO).
The memorandum also requested the deployment of two platoons of security forces at Sinakeithei Village, as well as one platoon each of MR/IRB personnel at Hongmahn, Mapao Zingsho and Zingtun, in order to ensure the safety and security of civilians in the region.
However, according to TNFO, as of now, only one platoon has been deployed at Sinakeithei Village, and no further action has been taken to address the remaining demands.
This limited response has left several vulnerable areas exposed and continues to put the lives of innocent civilians at significant risk, TNFO expressed.
TNFO further urged the state government to promptly deploy adequate state security forces in Thoyee and Sharkaphung villages to ensure the safety and protection of civilians and to restore normalcy in the affected areas.
