New Rajdhani and Amrit Bharat trains introduced under NFR expansion

The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has introduced 20 pairs of new train services during the financial year 2025–26, aimed at improving passenger connectivity, comfort and operational efficiency across its network.

The expansion includes a mix of premium, semi-premium and conventional trains intended to strengthen rail links within the Northeast as well as with other parts of the country. According to NFR, the move is part of ongoing efforts to improve accessibility, service quality and overall travel experience.

Among the new services is the Vande Bharat Sleeper Express operating between Kamakhya and Howrah, offering overnight travel with upgraded passenger amenities. In addition, seven pairs of Amrit Bharat Express trains have been introduced to provide long-distance connectivity at relatively affordable fares. These services connect locations including Nagercoil, Tiruchchirappalli, Gomti Nagar, Rohtak, Bengaluru, Panvel and Charlapalli.

Another addition is the Rajdhani Express connecting Sairang in Mizoram with Delhi, aimed at improving access between the state and the national capital.

NFR has also introduced other long-distance services such as the Humsafar Express between Jalpaiguri Road and Sealdah, and the Sairang–Kolkata–Sairang Express. At the regional level, new trains include the Sairang–Guwahati–Sairang Express, Silchar–Sairang–Silchar Express, NJP–Guwahati–NJP Express and Agartala–Narangi–Agartala Express, among others.

The newly introduced services include both express and passenger trains operating on daily, weekly and bi-weekly schedules across key routes in the zone.

The expansion is aligned with Indian Railways’ broader plans to improve last-mile connectivity, promote tourism and support socio-economic development in the Northeast and adjoining regions. NFR stated that it will continue to focus on providing safe and efficient passenger services while upgrading infrastructure and service standards.
