Boko: The Kamrup district administration and police jointly launched an operation against illegal brick kilns in the Singra-Roumari area under the Boko Revenue Circle on Tuesday.
Boko Revenue Circle Officer Dibas Bordoloi and Boko Police Station officer-in-charge Rajib Nath led a team to the Singra-Roumari area, identifying numerous illegal brick kilns operating on paddy fields adjacent to villages. With the help of an excavator, the team demolished ten illegal brick kiln structures in the area.
Villagers from the Singra area reported that every year, after the monsoon season, dishonest traders begin making “Bangla Bhata” bricks. These illegal brick kilns are burned down, releasing ash and smoke that cover the area, potentially causing respiratory difficulties.
Additionally, villagers alleged that the brick kilns are used to burn valuable tree species, such as shal and teak, which are allegedly collected from the Singra Reserve Forest area under the West Kamrup Division, sometimes with the knowledge or negligence of the forest department. Villagers further claimed that car tyres are also burned to ignite fires quickly, creating a foul-smelling environment that affects the entire area.
Despite repeated warnings, locals complained that the business owners often resort to confrontations when challenged. However, the recent operation has been widely praised by the community for taking decisive action. Revenue Circle Officer Dibas Bordoloi, speaking during the operation, confirmed that information about the illegal kilns had prompted immediate intervention.
He assured that similar operations would be carried out in other areas within the Boko Revenue Circle if further illegal activities were reported.
