Guwahati: Arunachal Pradesh, a jewel of biodiversity in the Northeast, has once again captivated the scientific community with the discovery of a new plant species, Henckelia arunachalensis. This remarkable find, emerging from the secluded Patkai Hills near Miao in Changlang District, underscores the region’s ecological significance and potential for undiscovered natural treasures.
The discovery was made during an exhaustive survey that began in 2018. Henckelia arunachalensis belongs to the Gesneriaceae family, a group of plants predominantly found in tropical and subtropical regions of Asia. This addition to the genus Henckelia brings fresh attention to its diversity, with India now hosting 42 species under this genus.
Vinay Kumar Sahani, the lead author of the study, collaborated with botanists from Arunachal Pradesh and Assam to identify the plant. Their findings were published in December in Phytotaxa, a prominent journal in plant taxonomy. Sahani is associated with the Society for Education and Environmental Development (SEED), an NGO dedicated to exploring Arunachal Pradesh’s rich flora and fauna.
Henckelia arunachalensis is distinctive in its morphology. The plant grows up to 40 centimeters tall and has elliptic to obovate leaves with 9–13 lateral veins, a striking difference from its closest relative, Henckelia dibangensis, which has fewer veins and ovate leaves. Its flowers, a captivating purplish-white with dark blue stripes and two prominent white flaps inside the corolla, make it visually unique. The plant thrives in moist roadside ditches on steep slopes surrounded by dense vegetation, but researchers documented only 18 plants, highlighting its rarity and ecological sensitivity.
Arunachal Pradesh’s Eastern Himalayan forests have long been recognized as a treasure trove of biodiversity. The discovery of Henckelia arunachalensis reaffirms the state’s status as a hub for botanical marvels and a frontier for scientific exploration.
Dipankar Borah, a co-author of the study, credited Sahani and his collaborators for their dedication to uncovering the plant. He highlighted SEED’s efforts in promoting environmental education and awareness in the remote corners of Miao, Arunachal Pradesh. Dipankar also noted the role of Minom, an engineer and photography enthusiast, whose documented flora inspired the team’s exploration of Changlang district.
Dipankar described how Sahani and his colleague Mayur discovered the plant in the community forests of Changlang, home to the famed Namdapha National Park, often called the “green gold” of India. Recognizing its unique features, the team, including Momang and Rohan, worked diligently to confirm it as a new species. After months of research and documentation, their work was published in Phytotaxa.
The plant was named Henckelia arunachalensis in honor of Arunachal Pradesh, a region rich with ecological mysteries yet to be unveiled. Dipankar expressed gratitude for the opportunity to contribute to the state’s natural legacy through this discovery.
While the finding highlights Arunachal Pradesh’s floral wealth, it also underscores urgent conservation concerns. The rugged terrain and forest cover that support this species face threats from deforestation, climate change, and human activity. The researchers classified Henckelia arunachalensis as “Data Deficient” under IUCN guidelines, urging extensive field studies to locate additional populations and better understand their ecological needs.
The research team remains optimistic about future discoveries in Arunachal Pradesh and advocates for strengthened conservation efforts, increased funding for botanical studies, and greater public awareness to protect the region’s rich biodiversity.
