Imphal: Unidentified miscreants placed a hand grenade outside the gate of GP Women’s College near Raj Bhavan on Monday morning, prompting students to stage a protest condemning the act in an educational institution.

Located less than 300 meters from the Chief Minister’s Secretariat and Police Headquarters, the college is in a high-security zone. According to reliable sources, a passerby discovered the bomb around 6 a.m. and immediately alerted the police for its swift disposal.

A note left beside the grenade read, “Down with Fascist Education System, Honour the Rights of Proletarian Students’ Free Education Movement, Glory to the Proletarian Students.” The incident has renewed concerns about safety among residents and passersby in the area, raising questions about the protection of students, especially amid recent extortion threats targeting educational institutions in the Imphal Valley.

Just a day before, on Sunday, angry locals blocked National Highway 102 after unknown miscreants planted a bomb at the residence of Dr. Laishram Somen, the proprietor of Sur Hospital in Khangabok Awang Leikai, Thoubal district. Reports state that a group of eight to nine armed men arrived in a Gypsy vehicle, demanding to see Dr. Somen and threatening his family members at gunpoint. The assailants left a hand grenade in the residence and seized four mobile phones before departing.
