Silchar: In a proactive move to uphold public hygiene, the Silchar Sadar police caught 86 individuals for urinating in public near the police station over the span of four days last week. These individuals were later released after receiving strict warnings.

According to information from the Silchar Sadar police station and other sources, the individuals were caught between Tuesday and Friday last week for urinating in drains near the police station, despite the presence of a notice prohibiting such actions. The notice clearly stated that violators would face a fine of Rs. 1000. However, the notice had long been ignored by many who continued to urinate in public, prompting the police to launch this special drive.

A Rotary Club initiative had set up a public toilet (Sulabh Shauchalay) near the police station, next to Fatak Bazar, the largest market in Silchar. Despite this, many people opted to urinate in public spaces, creating an unhygienic atmosphere for both locals and the police.

The caretaker of the public toilet mentioned that since the crackdown began, there has been a notable increase in the number of people using the facility. Local shop owners also applauded the police’s efforts, stating that the area around the police station has noticeably improved, with fewer instances of public urination.

An official at the Silchar Sadar police station, speaking to EASTMOJO on the condition of anonymity, said that the stench of urine had been a persistent issue, affecting the police personnel stationed there. Despite previous efforts to persuade people to use the public toilet, those attempts had proven ineffective, leading the police to adopt a stricter approach. Those caught were given warnings and released, the official added.
