Hideo Kojima has recently shared some intriguing insights into his highly anticipated Xbox-exclusive horror project, OD, a game he describes as “a new challenge” within the gaming world. OD was first revealed by Kojima Productions in 2023 during The Game Awards, but further details have been scarce since the initial announcement.
The 2023 reveal included the first and only trailer for OD to date, showcasing the collaborative work of Hideo Kojima and renowned director Jordan Peele, famous for his hit horror films like Get Out and Nope. This partnership has raised the expectations of fans, with Peele’s influence promising a unique take on horror within the gaming world. Additionally, OD boasts a star-studded cast, featuring actors Sophia Lillis, Hunter Schafer, and Udo Kier as key protagonists. Despite the excitement surrounding the project, neither Kojima Productions nor Xbox Game Studios have provided substantial updates since its announcement.
In a recent interview with Variety, conducted while discussing the upcoming Death Stranding film, Kojima briefly addressed his ambitious horror game. “I wanted to do something new that wasn’t Death Stranding, so I teamed up with Microsoft to create OD,” Kojima said. “This is a game, but it’s a game like no other. I can’t go into too much detail, and it’s also hard to explain, but it’s a bit risky and a new challenge for me within the realm of games.” While speculation has circulated about OD pushing the limits of gaming, Kojima’s own comments suggest that the game may redefine traditional gaming genres and experiences.
Kojima also provided some insight into how he and Jordan Peele began their collaboration. After Kojima did a podcast episode on Peele’s film Nope, he discovered that the director was a fan of his work. A Zoom call was arranged, during which Kojima invited Peele to join him in developing OD, further cementing the partnership that has since captivated fans of both filmmakers.
While OD remains shrouded in mystery, Kojima also hinted at another project in the works—an espionage title called Physint. Though it is still in the early concept phase, Physint adds another intriguing project to Kojima Productions’ busy slate. However, with the release of Death Stranding 2 scheduled for 2025, it’s possible that OD and Physint may take a backseat for the time being.

Rumours surrounding OD have circulated for a while, with some speculating that the game might feature a multiplayer experience. It has also drawn comparisons to P.T., Kojima’s highly acclaimed but ultimately cancelled demo for a Silent Hill game. Despite these comparisons, OD is expected to stand on its own as a new intellectual property, diverging significantly from the style of P.T..
While fans eagerly await more information on OD, they can enjoy the latest content from Death Stranding 2, which was recently showcased at the 2024 Tokyo Game Show. The footage included some in-game content and an impressive photo mode, giving fans plenty to look forward to.
