Kohima: The Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA) has issued a weather alert predicting heavy rainfall across the state until August 29, 2024. Almost all districts in Nagaland are expected to experience cloudy skies and significant rainfall, with thunderstorms and lightning likely in isolated areas.
The NSDMA identified Chumoukedima, Kohima, Longleng, Mokokchung, Mon, Niuland, Peren, and Wokha as districts expected to face particularly heavy downpours during this period. Other districts may experience moderate rainfall, but the potential for weather-related disruptions remains across the state.
Lowland and foothill regions, including Dimapur, Niuland, Chumoukedima, Bhandari, Pangti, Tizit, and Tuli, are at increased risk of waterlogging and flash floods due to the high precipitation levels in the hills. The NSDMA has advised the public to take precautions against possible risks, such as lightning strikes and strong winds, which could disrupt communication and connectivity.
There are additional concerns about landslides, particularly in hilly areas like Kohima, where district headquarters may face isolation due to heavy rainfall.
The NSDMA has called on all District Disaster Management Authorities and related departments to remain on high alert to safeguard lives and property during this period. Departments responsible for maintaining public infrastructure have also been urged to stay vigilant, as landslides and other weather-related incidents may require immediate response.
