Imphal: The Hmar Inpui, the apex body representing the Hmar tribe, has strongly refuted recent claims made by the Chief Minister of Manipur, N. Biren Singh, during his address to the Manipur State Assembly on August 12, 2024.

In a press statement, Hmar Inpui categorically denied what it called an “outrageous and baseless” statement by the Chief Minister, who claimed that the Hmar community was in touch with him.

“The preposterous claim that the Hmars are in touch with him is not only false but a desperate attempt to sow discord among the agnate tribes who have stood united in the face of the ongoing crisis,” the statement read.

The Hmar Inpui emphasised that any individuals or so-called Hmar leaders engaging with N. Biren Singh are acting out of their own vested interests and do not represent the Hmar community. The apex body stated that these actions have no recognition or endorsement from the Hmar Inpui.

The press release further underscored the unity of the Hmar people with their agnate tribes, asserting that they will not betray the cause that binds them together. “We are brethren, united not just by our shared history and culture but also by the common pain and suffering inflicted upon us by those who seek to divide and destroy us,” the statement declared.

The Hmar Inpui called on all members of the Hmar community and their agnate tribes to remain vigilant against divisive tactics, reaffirming that their unity is their strength. The organization vowed to continue resisting the ongoing ethnic cleansing that has been allegedly supported by the state government, describing it as a “dark chapter” in their history.

“We reiterate our commitment to stand firm in the face of adversity, to protect our people, and to ensure that justice prevails,” the Hmar Inpui declared, stating that the Hmar people will not be intimidated or swayed from their cause, regardless of the cost.

In a strong condemnation of the current political climate, the Hmar Inpui accused the present political dispensation and certain radical elements within the Meitei community of pursuing an apartheid-like policy against the Kuki-Zo (Zohnathlak) people. “They may try to negate our history with their bitter twisted lies, but the Truth will prevail eventually,” the statement concluded.
