Aizawl: Mizoram University has climbed to the 26th position in the most recent Central University rankings released by India Today, reflecting a significant improvement from its 29th position in 2023.
Mizoram University was created by an Act of Parliament (No. 8 of 2000) and became functional on July 2, 2001. The University is located in Aizawl, the capital city of Mizoram, over 978 acres on the city outskirts. Before Mizoram University’s establishment, the North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) operated a campus in Mizoram, consisting of seven Post-Graduate Departments.
Over its 22 years of existence, Mizoram University has made considerable progress in infrastructure, academic programs, manpower, and support services. The university was accredited with an ‘A’ grade by NAAC in 2014 and 2019 and received ISO Certification in 2018. From 2016 to 2023, it was ranked among the top 100 universities in India by the NIRF rankings under the MHRD. In the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings 2022, the University secured the 1st rank in the North-East Region of India. Additionally, it ranked 1st among the central universities in the North-East region, achieving the 13th position in the Indian Institutional Ranking Framework (IIRF) 2023’s Top 20 Central Universities category.
The university comprises 39 academic departments offering UG, PG, and PhD programs under 10 Schools of Study, with 40 affiliated colleges and one constituent college. Mizoram University is one of the pioneering institutions in the country to successfully implement the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) since 2013. In line with the NEP 2020, Mizoram University is progressing towards offering programs that envisage broad-based, multidisciplinary, and holistic education at various levels of UG and PG programs.
Students and faculty members have welcomed the news of the improved ranking, viewing it as a validation of their collective efforts. The local community has also lauded the University’s rise in the rankings, recognising the positive impact the institution has on the region’s educational and socio-economic development.
