Dimapur: In a recent development surrounding the demand for Frontier Nagaland Territory (FNT), the Eastern Nagaland People’s Organisation (ENPO) shed light on their proposal and the government’s response. Addressing the issue, president of the Eastern Nagaland People’s Organisation (ENPO), Tsapikiu Sangtam, provided insights into the ongoing negotiations and the stance taken by both the central and state governments.
The ENPO, in its pursuit of addressing regional concerns, had initially sought separate statehood or Union Territory status. However, recognizing the complexities involved and the challenges posed by these demands, a unique proposal emerged as a middle ground. Sangtam elucidated that this proposal, falling under Article 371(A), offers a distinct arrangement, neither akin to an Autonomous Council nor equivalent to a Union Territory, but a nuanced compromise.
Sangtam emphasized that while this unique arrangement was not the ENPO’s initial demand, it was a pragmatic response to the intricacies of the situation. He underscored the importance of finding a solution that respects the interests of all stakeholders – the Naga people, the state government, and the central government.
However, progress on this front has been contingent upon the response from the state government. Despite reminders and representations, the ENPO has yet to receive a formal reply regarding the draft Memorandum of Settlement (MoS). This delay prompted the organization to resort to a total shutdown and agitation, highlighting the urgency of the matter.
Notably, Sangtam clarified that the ENPO’s actions, including abstaining from the Lok Sabha elections, are not a boycott but a strategic abstention to underscore their concerns while respecting democratic principles.
Regarding the central government’s role, Sangtam affirmed that they have fulfilled their commitments and await the state government’s response to move forward. He urged for timely action to avoid further escalation of tensions and to pave the way for constructive dialogue.
As the negotiations unfold, all eyes are on the response from the state government, which holds the key to progressing towards a resolution that balances the aspirations and concerns of all stakeholders involved.
