Imphal: Union Home Minister Amit Shah made a significant appearance in Manipur on Monday, addressing an election rally at Hapta Kangjeibung in Imphal East. Shah, in his maiden visit to Manipur this year, emphasised the central government’s commitment to achieving peace and solutions without disrupting the state’s integrity.
Speaking to a massive gathering, Shah said that the ongoing Lok Sabha election is not merely a contest between the BJP and Congress but a battle against forces attempting to undermine the unity of the state.
“The destiny of the country will change when that of the northeast and Manipur will change,” said Shah.
Shah also raised concerns about attempts of demographic change through infiltration in Manipur.
“Chief minister N Biren Singh has made a big demand before PM Modi that Manipur cannot remain united without the Inner Line Permit (ILP). The BJP government has strengthened Manipur by implementing ILP,” he said.
Appealing to the electorate, the Union Home Minister urged support for BJP candidates Th Basanta Singh in the Inner Manipur seat and Kachui Timothy Zimik in the Outer Manipur Parliamentary constituency.
Despite Shah’s rally drawing thousands from across the state, pockets of unrest were observed in Imphal, notably in areas like Checkon and Lamlong. Protesters, voicing their discontent, resorted to burning tires and blocking roads, hindering access to the rally venue.
