Imphal: Days after the shocking attack on law enforcement officials, the Manipur Police has finally reacted to the activities of radical outfit Arambai Tenggol, condemning their “life-threatening attack on Additional Superintendent of Police (OPS), Imphal West, and other police personnel by members of Arambai Tenggol on the evening of February 27, 2024.”
The incident has sent shockwaves across the rife-torn state, and on Wednesday, and Manipur police commandos from Imphal West, Imphal East, and Bishnupur put down their arms in protest after senior officers allegedly instructed them to restrain from the use of arms or forceful action, despite the armed miscreants firing at and vandalizing the house of a police official in Imphal East on Tuesday evening.
The Manipur Police said the attack on officers also involved the intimidation of family members of Moirangthem Amit Singh through gunfire, along with the vandalism of houses and properties. Amit Singh was abducted, beaten, and subsequently released after prompt intervention by the department. The police department has expressed concern about the circulation of fabricated narratives on various platforms, including social media, leading to the character assassination of the officer and the department.
“The incident originated from information received on February 27, 2024, about the theft/snatching of two Ambassador Cars from the Government Oil Depot located at North AOC by unidentified armed miscreants. In response, officers including Shri Moirangthem Amit Singh and Inspector P Achouba Meitei conducted a search, intercepted the stolen/snatched vehicles, and apprehended an individual involved in the crime. A case was registered under FIR no 106 (2) 2024 at Imphal Police Station under sections 379A/400/506/34 IPC,” the Police said in a statement.
Arambai Tenggol targeted the officers and attacked the residence and properties of the Additional SP in connection with the lawful discharge of their duties related to the above incident, the police said, adding that Moirangthem Amit Singh, Achouba Meitei, and others have been actively working to maintain law and order in Imphal West district.
The Manipur Police Department requested the general public for cooperation and urges them to refrain from spreading rumors and fake news. Arambai Tenggol is accused of engaging in anti-social activities, including assaulting civilians, snatching vehicles from the public and government officials, and extortion from the public and businessmen. “The public is encouraged not to be misled and to support Manipur Police in restoring peace and tranquility in the state. The police assure continued combing operations, and those responsible for criminal activities will face consequences,” the Police added.
