Assam BJP registers nearly 13 lakh new members in first week: CM

Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday said that his government would request the central government to allow the state to host the next editions of the national games. Stating that Assam has a rich legacy of hosting national-level sporting events, he said, “While Assam successfully hosted the National Games for the first time in 2007, I am keen to request the Central government to grant Assam the opportunity to host the National Games in either 2025 or 2026.”

According to him, Assam’s illustrious history of hosting premier sporting events, including the 12th South Asian Games in 2016, and the FIFA U-17 World Cup, among others makes the state the right place for such events.

Chief Minister Sarma highlighted his government’s dedication to advancing sports development, keeping with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision.

“I am confident that the land of Assam can produce more outstanding athletes who will bring honor to the nation and enhance its sporting legacy,” he added.

He emphasised the state government’s commitment to bolstering sports infrastructure by initiating the construction of sports complexes in all districts and 126 assembly constituencies.

Sarma disclosed significant investments, including Rs 800 crore allocated for transforming the Nehru Stadium in Guwahati into a world-class football stadium, along with the construction of sports complexes in Amingaon and Chandrapur. Additionally, funds have been earmarked for developing sports complexes in each district and assembly constituency.
