Shillong: The capital city of Meghalaya celebrated the inauguration of its first microbrewery, “The Yeastern Civilization,” on Friday. This establishment is the first of its kind in Meghalaya, offering the people of Shillong a chance to savour freshly brewed local beer.
Situated in Laitumkhrah, The Yeastern Civilization boasts a unique setting, making it an attractive spot for both tourists and locals seeking a taste of freshly brewed beer. Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, who inaugurated the microbrewery, hailed it as a ground-breaking project, expressing excitement about the innovative endeavours undertaken by young entrepreneurs.
“It excites me to see that young entrepreneurs are taking up new projects and doing things that have not been done before. They are bringing new technology and processes which will provide a new experience to tourists and citizens,” remarked Chief Minister Sangma.

The Shillong microbrewery is set to offer a distinctive experience to visitors, featuring tailor-made beers crafted from locally sourced ingredients such as pineapples and Khasi mandarin, both abundant in Meghalaya. The establishment, which includes a restaurant, bar, and multifunctional space, aims to generate revenue for local farmers and producers.
During the inauguration, Chief Minister Sangma initiated the brewing machinery, with fresh beer expected to be available to the public in just 28 days.
Excise Minister Kyrmen Shylla highlighted the positive impact the Shillong microbrewery would have on the local community, providing employment opportunities for youths. He emphasized the commitment to supporting local farmers and suppliers, thereby creating avenues for economic growth in Meghalaya.
