Shillong: Basking in the glory after winning two seats out of three Meghalaya Assembly Constituencies, the National People’s Party (NPP) on Tuesday said the Congress’ loss is an indication that there is a problem and a bleak future for the party.
Following the announcement of the poll results, the NPP held a press conference with senior leaders like NPP state president WR Kharlukhi, national president Conrad K Sangma, Prestone Tynsong and Sniawbhalang Dhar.
Lashing out at the Congress, senior leader Prestone Tynsong said during the campaigning for the by-polls, they have seen the Congress agenda, how they went to the voters leveling childish allegations against the NPP-led MDA govt.
“Yet the people of these three constituencies are smarter than those people. They have full faith in the government. On behalf of the NPP, we would like to thank all three constituencies who have given us the victory with a very good margin,” said Tynsong.
Adding that it was now time for the party and also the government to perform better since they don’t have much time with the coming general election early 2023, NPP national president Conrad K Sangma thanked the people of all the three constituencies for having faith in the NPP.
Thanking the voters of Mawphlang, who voted for UDP, Sangma said it is a direct mandate towards the government itself.
Sangma termed the by-polls to the Mawryngkneng and Rajabala seats as the toughest two seats to win since it was a Congress stronghold.
“The fight was tough but they have put their trust. It’s a clear mandate and a thumbs up by these constituencies. It’s because of the work and agendas of this government the people had faith in us,” added Sangma.
Stating that there has been a lot of allegations, Sangma stated that during the campaign they did not speak much but wanted to play politics of development.
Sangma said the Congress failed to secure a single seat in the Northeast and that it was a clear indication of the problems the Congress was facing and that it has a bleak future.
Asked if this was an indication of the NPP making a comeback in the 2023 Elections, Sangma said that it’s still a year away, so they can’t predict and can’t be complacent about it.
“We need to work harder and we have to organise ourselves,” added Sangma.
Asked about the Congress alleging that the NPP has used money to win this election, NPP state president WR Kharlukhi said they should come up with evidence.
“The Congress ruled 30 years or so and what they did was negative campaigning and this negative campaign has led them nowhere. Today the result is very clear… that the people don’t want to listen to negative message but would look at what work you have done for them,” Kharlukhi said.
