Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) leader Akhil Gogoi will contest the 2021 elections in Assam from Sivasagar constituency in Upper Assam, as stated by Dhaijya Konwar, his deputy who is presently out on bail.

Gogoi has been incarcerated for his role in the protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act. According to Konwar, he is certain that Gogoi will contest from the Sivasagar Assembly Constituency and added that the ‘Raijor Dol,’- formed by KMSS, is holding “informal talks” with the fellow regional party Asom Jatiya Parishad (AJP).

Konwar is positive that there will be good news in January in regards to an alliance. However, talks are yet to reach a formal state, he added.

On Sunday, the head office of the regional party was inaugurated along with the unveiling of the new flag.

Gogoi was arrested on December 12 as a preventive measure as protests against the CAA resulted in violence in various places. Later, his case was handed over to the National Investigation Agency (NIA). NIA then filed a chargesheet against the peasant leader on June 29, 2020, for allegedly conspiring with the CPI (Maoist) group for commissioning alleged terrorist acts.

While in jail, the KMSS floated its own regional party called “Raijor Dol” to contest the polls in Assam.
