Guwahati: Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the results of Swachh Survekahan 2020 awards and the fifth edition saw the Northeastern state of Assam clinching many titles. This includes winner of the Fastest Mover State in an overall category of Best Performing States.
This is the fifth edition of the annual cleanliness survey of India and a total of 129 awards were handed over to the top-performing cities and states in the programme titled ‘Swachh Mahotsav’.

In the Northeast zone under the category of 50,000 to 1 lakh population category, Assam clinched all the spots. The romantic city of Tezpur won the best city via the feedback of citizens. Jorhat won the cleanest city in the Northeast zone and Diphu clinched the title of ‘Fastest Mover’. Sivasagar won the best city in ‘Innovation and Best practices’ criteria while Karimganj clinched the best ‘Self Sustainable City’.

Under the 25,000 to 50,000 population category, Hailakandi won the Best City in ‘Innovation & Best practices,’ while Silapathar clinched the ‘Fastest Mover’ City.’

Assam was able to get another spot in the below 25,000 population category where Lakhimpur clinched the ‘Fastest Mover’s City.’
Assam also the winner of the Fastest Mover State in an overall category of Best Performing States.
Additionally, Silchar secured an all India rank of 340 in the cleanest city category while emerging as the cleanest city in Assam. This is followed by Dibrugarh with an over all ranking of 353, Guwahati at 356 and Nagaon at 358.

Swachh Survekshan 2020 event organised by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) is also the world’s largest cleanliness survey as it ranked 4,242 cities, 92 Ganga Towns, and 62 Cantonment Boards. This year saw unprecedented participation of 1.87 crore citizens as well.
The government of India introduced this event intending to generate a large scale citizen participation in the mission, thereby inculcating a spirit of healthy competition between the cities, to become India’s cleanest city. This year, Indore won the title of India’s cleanest city.
