Boro cinema takes the spotlight with 'Bibo Binanao' at IFFI Goa

Renowned filmmaker Kenny Basumatary’s debut Boro-language film, Bibo Binanao (My Three Sisters), premiered at the prestigious International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa. The film, produced by the National Film Development Corporation of India (NFDC), marks a significant milestone for the Boro film industry, combining heartfelt storytelling with Basumatary’s signature style.

Set in rural Bodoland, Bibo Binanao is a dramedy that delves into the lives of four sisters as they navigate challenges, including family tragedies, an abusive spouse, health crises, and their aspirations to raise chickens. The youngest sister, Mizi, played by Pansy Brahma, is the pillar of strength for her siblings, portrayed by Sangeena Brahma, Helina Daimary, and Mithinga Narzary. Praising his cast, Kenny expressed his satisfaction with their performances, saying, “It was an absolute pleasure to work with all these actresses. They were always prepared, allowing us to shoot long takes without interruptions. Each of them delivered performances exactly as I envisioned.”

The film also features Rubul Boro, a familiar face in the Boro film industry, known for his villainous roles. In a departure from his usual characters, he takes on a gentlemanly role in Bibo Binanao, showcasing his versatility.

Kenny Basumatary attended the IFFI red carpet event alongside National Award-winning director Kulanandini Mahanta, who served as the production designer, and Alex Leo Pou, executive producer from NFDC. The director also walked the red carpet for Swargarath, another film in the festival’s Panorama section.

Recalling the first screening of Bibo Binanao at IFFI, Basumatary shared, “We were apprehensive about the turnout. After all, who would come to watch a Boro film, especially one directed by me, not exactly a festival-famous filmmaker? But to our pleasant surprise, around 70 people attended. While it isn’t an outright comedy, it was heartening to hear the audience laugh at the right moments. Many viewers came up to us after the screening to express how much they enjoyed it.”

For audiences in Assam, Bibo Binanao will have its state premiere at the Brahmaputra Valley Film Festival (BVFF) in the competition section. However, a theatrical release has not been planned. “NFDC will hopefully send the film to more festivals,” said Basumatary.
