Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has stepped up its focus on ensuring the safety and security of women passengers, especially those travelling alone on long-distance trains. To enhance safety across its rail network, NFR has deployed dedicated teams of women Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel under the “Meri Saheli” initiative.
Fifteen dedicated Meri Saheli squads, made up of female RPF officers and staff, are now operational at various railway stations across the NFR zone. These teams are responsible for the safety of women passengers, especially those travelling solo, offering assistance and support throughout their journey. Additionally, 53 Anti-Human Trafficking Units (AHTU) are functioning under NFR to prevent and protect women passengers from potential traffickers. As a result of these efforts, four women were rescued from trafficking, and three traffickers were arrested in the current year.
In 2024, up to August, NFR reported six cases of crimes against women, leading to the arrest of six criminals. To further bolster safety, around ten trains are regularly escorted by mixed teams, consisting of both male and female RPF personnel. These mixed-escort parties are positioned to provide immediate assistance to women passengers in distress.

To strengthen women’s security on its trains and in its stations, NFR has installed CCTV surveillance systems at 46 stations within its jurisdiction. This step is part of a broader effort to create a secure environment for women travelling by rail. Additionally, the RPF ensures that the doors of stabled coaches are closed, reducing the risk of these empty carriages being misused for crimes against women within railway premises.
NFR’s proactive efforts highlight its commitment to women’s safety and empowerment. The deployment of women personnel for critical security roles under the Meri Saheli initiative not only ensures a safer travel experience for female passengers but also addresses the needs of the women officers performing these duties.
