In line with the Government’s ongoing mission to promote cleanliness and hygiene across India, Indian Railways is set to observe the Swachhata Hi Seva 2024 campaign from September 14 to October 1. This year’s campaign will operate under the theme ‘Swabhav Swachhata – Sanskaar Swachhata’, and will culminate in the celebration of Swachh Bharat Diwas on 2nd October 2024, marking the 10th anniversary of the launch of the Swachh Bharat Mission.
The Swachh Bharat Mission was initiated to promote cleanliness, proper hygiene, and discourage open defecation. Over the last decade, it has played a significant role in fostering public awareness and action around maintaining cleanliness in public spaces, including railway stations and tracks.
This year, the Swachhata Hi Seva campaign will focus on three pillars of action:
- Swachhata ki Bhagidaari (Participatory Cleanliness)
- Sampoorna Swachhata (Complete Cleanliness)
- Safai Mitra Suraksha Shivirs (Sanitation Worker Safety Camps)
The campaign is designed to mobilise citizens through a variety of activities, aiming to integrate cleanliness into daily behaviour, with the core message being the promotion of Swabhav Swachhata (habitual cleanliness) and Sanskaar Swachhata (cleanliness as a value).
Throughout the two-week campaign, N.F. Railway will conduct major programs to spread awareness about sanitation. Activities will include mass cleanliness drives at workplaces, railway stations, and along railway tracks to engage railway employees, passengers, and the wider community.
A special focus will also be placed on recognising the contributions of Safai Mitras (sanitation workers), honouring their pivotal role in maintaining cleanliness across the railways. These workers, along with other key stakeholders, will be acknowledged for their efforts and dedication to the mission.

In addition, medical camps will be organised at various health units, with personal protective equipment (PPE) and medical supplies provided to sanitation workers. The campaign will also host sensitisation workshops to raise awareness about health, safety, and the wellbeing of these vital workers.
This initiative is part of Indian Railways’ broader commitment to contributing to a cleaner, safer India, aligning with the Government’s vision for a Swachh Bharat.
