Two New Judges Appointed to Supreme Court

The Supreme Court of India has gained two new judges following the recent appointments approved by President Droupadi Murmu. The appointments of Justice N Kotiswar Singh and Justice R Mahadevan were confirmed today by Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal.

These appointments come after a recommendation by the Supreme Court Collegium. With the addition of these judges, the Supreme Court now has its full complement of 34 judges, including Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud.

Justice N Kotiswar Singh, who is the first judge from Manipur to be appointed to the Supreme Court, is currently serving as the Chief Justice of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. He is the son of N Ibotombi Singh, Manipur’s first Advocate General. Justice Singh completed his education at Kirori Mal College and the Campus Law Centre, at Delhi University. He began his legal career as an advocate in 1986 and has previously served as the Advocate General of Manipur, as well as holding positions in the Gauhati High Court and Manipur High Court.

Justice R Mahadevan, who is the acting Chief Justice of the Madras High Court, has been appointed to the Supreme Court as well. A Chennai native and alumnus of Madras Law College, Justice Mahadevan has a distinguished legal career. He has represented clients in over 9,000 cases and has held various roles including Additional Government Pleader (taxes) for Tamil Nadu, Additional Central Government Standing Counsel, and Senior Panel Counsel for the Government of India at the Madras High Court. He was elevated to the bench of the Madras High Court in 2013.
