Coal industry breaks record in February with 11.6% growth

The coal industry registered the highest growth of 11.6 per cent among the eight core industries in February 2024, according to the Index of Eight Core Industries (ICI).

The coal industry’s index of 212.1 points during February 2024 is 212.1 points higher than the 190.1 points recorded during the same period of last year.

The ICI is a tool used to measure the combined and individual production performance of eight core industries.

The coal industry’s growth of 11.6 per cent in February 2024 shows a surge in coal production during the month, with output reaching 96.60 million tonnes, an increase of 11.83 per cent when compared to the same period in 2023-24.

The coal industry has outperformed the other eight core industries in terms of growth over the past eight months and has registered substantially higher growth than the overall growth of the eight core industries over the past two financial years.

The growth driver behind this remarkable growth in the coal industry can be attributed to a significant increase in coal production in February 2024.
