The government of India has approved an agreement to assist Bhutan in enhancing energy efficiency and energy conservation measures. The agreement will help the country improve the efficiency of buildings and promote the use of star-rated appliances.
As part of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), the Bureau of Energy Efficiency, Ministry of Power, Government of India, and the Department of Energy, Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources, Royal Government of Bhutan, will work together to enhance the energy efficiency of the household sector in Bhutan. This will include the development of building codes that are suitable for the climate condition of the country.
The aim is to create a pool of energy professionals in Bhutan by institutionalising the training of energy auditors. This will help in the effective dissemination of energy-efficient products and services to consumers. The agreement also seeks to support Bhutan in the development and implementation of a standards and labelling scheme for products.
Energy-intensive appliances are the main products that result in higher energy consumption at homes and commercial establishments. Increased demand for electrical energy is creating problems, which can be reduced by using more efficient appliances. The Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) is spearheading the country’s Star-labelling program, which currently covers 37 appliances used in daily life.
