To reduce snakebite deaths by half by 2030, the Government of India has unveiled a national action plan for preventing and controlling snakebites.
The plan envisions a framework where states can develop their own action plans for management, prevention, and control of snakebites through the “One Health” approach. The concerned stakeholders at all levels, including human, wildlife, tribal, and animal health, will be working together to implement the activities outlined in the plan.
To raise awareness about snakebites and to promote the implementation of preventive measures, the government has also unveiled various materials including a booklet on ‘Snakebite – Let’s put an end to snakebite deaths’, posters on Do’s and Don’ts for the general community, and a 7-minute video on Snakebite Awareness for General Community.
These materials will be highly effective in raising awareness, spreading critical information, and empowering communities to take proactive measures against snakebites.
It is a matter of concern that a large number of people are still not aware of how to prevent snakebites and how to treat a snakebite.
The government hopes that through the implementation of these initiatives, the number of snakebite deaths will be reduced by half by 2030.
