In a groundbreaking discovery that could reshape the future of the tea industry, researchers led by Nagaland University have found that the often-discarded tea blossoms—the delicate flowers of the tea plant—are rich in powerful bioactive compounds.

The multi-institutional study shows that these blossoms could emerge as a new frontier in natural health supplements and functional beverages, unlocking opportunities for farmers and the nutraceutical industry alike.

While global attention has long focused on tea leaves, these researchers turned their attention to what is usually discarded.

Their study—the first of its kind in Assam, one of the world’s largest tea-producing regions—systematically analysed blossoms from seven premium tea cultivars, revealing a treasure trove of polyphenols, catechins, terpenoids, and L-theanine.

Remarkably, the flowers contained lower caffeine but higher antioxidant levels than traditional leaves, making them ideal for health-focused applications.

“Tea blossoms are a goldmine of health-enhancing compounds,” said Dr. Sagarika Das of Dibrugarh University’s Centre for Biotechnology and Bioinformatics, who led the research. “They promote mental clarity, relaxation, and stress reduction—offering the wellness benefits of tea without the jitters. By repurposing these blossoms, we can reduce agricultural waste, improve farmer incomes, and diversify India’s tea economy.”

Published in the prestigious Food Research Journal (DOI: 10.1016/j.foodres.2025.117337), the study was co-authored by scientists from India and abroad.

The research team included Mr. Monoranjan Goswami from the Tocklai Tea Research Institute, Jorhat; Prof. Tanmoy Karak from Nagaland University; and collaborators from the University of California, USA, and the ICAR–Indian Agricultural Statistics Research Institute, New Delhi.

According to Prof. Karak, the findings could herald a new era in sustainable tea innovation.

“Tea blossoms should no longer be viewed as agricultural waste,” he said. “They can be transformed into herbal teas, infused oils, dietary supplements, and wellness formulations. Their rich antioxidant profile shows immense promise for stress relief, cognitive enhancement, and chronic disease prevention. With further validation, tea blossoms could be at the heart of India’s next health revolution.”

The implications extend beyond science. By collecting and processing tea blossoms, smallholder farmers could gain new income streams, while the industry moves toward circular bioeconomy practices—turning waste into value and promoting environmental sustainability.

Nagaland University Vice Chancellor Prof. Jagadish K. Patnaik hailed the research as a milestone for the region’s innovation ecosystem.

“This discovery underscores how innovation from our region can have global impact,” he said. “By exploring the untapped potential of tea blossoms, our scientists are contributing to sustainable health solutions and rural entrepreneurship. It’s a testament to how science can drive both social and economic transformation.”

The team now plans to advance to clinical trials, exploring how tea blossom extracts could be combined with other nutraceuticals for functional foods, beverages, and pharmaceuticals. With the world’s growing appetite for eco-friendly, plant-based health products, India could soon find itself leading a global market built on the gentle power of tea.
